It is that time of year again–summer is over– BACK TO SCHOOL!!! Embrace this time and carefully consider what is needed to get your child excited to start a new school year with the least stress and anxiety.
Start your child on the school sleep/wake schedule a few weeks before school starts so they will be so it is not a factor in their first days of school.
Take your child to an educational activity like a museum at the end of summer to get their minds in gear and encourage them to read at least one book. Do not go over last years school material as this might make them fear all they have forgotten.
You don’t need to wait until the first day of school to discuss any concerns you might have, specific needs of your child or anything that has changed or developed over the summer. The best time to do this is two weeks before school starts.
Take advantage of the “Open House” or “Back to School NIght”. Most children are questioning if they will like their teacher. Go over the curriculum with the new teacher so you can be prepared to provide support. Tour the school point out exits and if your child is older let them lead the tour.
Call parents of the kids in your child’s class last year or in the neighborhood and plan a playdate ahead or a car pool.
Get a list of supplies and go shopping with your child. A small splurge on a special backpack or pen can help get them excited and feel important Have him or her practice using the supplies. Help them pick out a couple of new outfits so your child can go to school confident, comfortable and stylish.
Routines can help children feel comfortable and establishing a solid schedule can make them feel in control and make the first day of school go much smoother.
